Waunarlwydd v Bonymaen | Sat 30 Dec

Waunarlwydd held to a draw with Bonymaen on a Saturday which resembled a Christmas hangover; cloudy, rough and full of regret. A depleted Waunarlwydd side with a few players playing out of position were unlucky not to win the game, but a draw was probably a fair result.

Both teams traded early penalties but it was Waun going over for the first try, spreading the ball wide after a few phases on the half way line, James Cleary making a clean break and passing inside to wing Julaen Goni-Mathews to score. Bony answered back immediately, gathering the ball from the restart using an overlap on the blind side with the draw and give in front of the last defender causing Waun to commit an early tackle. The Referee deemed the tackle a foul stopping a clear scoring opportunity, awarding a yellow card and penalty try to make the score 10 - 10. Bony then scored a well worked backs move from a scrum on the half way line, crash ball in the centre which was popped out the back before contact,  creating an overlap for Bony fullback to finish an excellent move putting the visitors in front by 7 points. Lee Evans kicking well to bring the home team back to within 4 points before the halftime whistle.

Second half started with both teams struggling to make the ball stick in difficult conditions, making for a stop start first 20 minutes. Wauns front row obviously consumed a large amount of turkey over Christmas, with a high protein intake they dominated a scrum from 10yds out, pushing a large Bonymaen pack back over their try line for number 8 Steff Jones to score. Changes were then made by Waunarlwydd with the introduction of Alan Pope and Sion Evans, who both need contact like the devil needs sinners, lifting aggression levels going into the final part of the game. Waun defended well but were guilty of giving away penalties in key areas 5 minutes before time, allowing Bony to convert at the second time of asking to draw the game.
