Waunarlwydd v Bonymaen | 8 Sept 2018

Waunarlwydd lose out as Bonymaen win by a point in a back and forth game at Roseland Road.

It wasn't until after the 25 minute mark that the first points were scored, with a penalty from Bony. Waun answered back almost immediately going wide after a few phases, Andrew Spowart straightening the line to feed Sam Pridgeon who finished well from 10yds out. Bony applied lots of pressure at the end of the half resulting in two yellow cards for Waunarlwydd, the pressing continued and Bony powered over from 5yds out.

HT Waunarlwydd 7 - 10 Bonymaen

Capitalising on the two yellow cards which were still in place at the start of the second half, Bony come out strong. Scrum on the half way line led to an excellent cross field kick from the outside half straight into the flying wingers hands, who drew the full back and passed to the supporting centre who ran clear to make the score 7 - 17. Waun then began to rally, Steff Jones led the way with his strong tackling, running and tan on display throughout the game. Putting some phases together the ball went wide to Stuart "Pythagoras" Nicholas who is excellent at picking angles. Stuart ran straight going against the drift defence splitting the line like a salmon swimming up stream, finishing from 30yds out to put Waun back in the game. A clever quick tap and go by Steff Jones give Waun a penalty resulting in a yellow for Bony for not retreating 10yds. Penalty try was awarded to Waun from the resulting scrum giving them a slender lead of two points. Bony took the lead with 5 minutes to go with a penalty, Waun were camped in the opposition 22 for the remainder of the game where a drop goal would have clinched the win, but Waun failed to be as clinical as the winners Bonymaen.

Special mentions this week going to Sion Evans and Phil Evans who both played extremely well. Sion was powerful and doggedly harrased the opposition when they were in possession. Phil who had been called up after an excellent display for the athletic last week continued where he left off, playing out of position in the second row but having all the qualities of a back row player, being good around the park carrying well and tackling strongly all game. Well done to the Athletic who were playing on the top pitch and Won 22 - 5 against Maesteg Quins in an entertaining, open match.
