Bridgend Athletic v Waunarlwydd | 30th Sept 2017

Bridgend Athletic made the most of the wet and heavy conditions with a strong performance to beat Waunarlwydd.

Bridgend played well in the first half  employing a forward orientated kick chase tactic to good effect, pouncing on any mistakes Waun made. A penalty and two early tries, where the blind side was used to good effect resulting in Bridgend going into a 0-15 lead early on. Scrum half Aled Thomas then created a good try, throwing a dummy from a line out hitting the gap before chipping the last man for a support player to touch down. Waun were then guilty of forcing the game making mistakes in their own 22 to gift Bridgend another try.

HT Waunarlwydd 0 - 27 Bridgend Athletic

Second half saw a full front row change for Waun in an attempt to counter the dominance of the Bridgend pack at scrum time. Ryan Porter who like a tea bag you don't realise how strong he is until you put him in hot water, impressed off the bench with his best performance so far this season. The front row change gave Waun the upper hand at the scrum and give the trailing side a much needed lift. With the tempo raised and more aggressive running Waun finally scored their first try. Bridgend outside half Robin Davies who had an excellent game, answered back throwing two dummys going over the line after a great solo effort. Waun backs Alex Tregembo and Andrew Rees-Spowart combined well returning a kick putting Stuart Nicholas into space, after a few phases and a quick tap penalty Waun were over for their second. A third came in the way of a catch and drive from a line out close to Bridgends try line seeing Jacob Blackmore finish the powerful drive. A spirited fight back from Waun, but had left themselves with to much to do after a disappointing first 40 minutes.

Good performances off the bench from Ryan Porter and Andrew Lloyd gave a much improved second half from Waunarlwydd. Also going well was the consistent Lee Evans at scrum half. Man of the Match went to Bridgend outside half Robin Davies who controlled the game in the first half and scored a good try in the second to see the visitors win the game.
