Ystalyfera v Waunarlwydd | 14th Oct 2017

Well organised Ystalyfera put in excellent first half display and stopped a second half revival to beat Waunarlwydd in the Swansea valley.

First half started with both sides displaying hard running and tough tackling, but it was fera who would have the best of the half scoring three very good trys. After going through multiple phases and kicking to space behind Waunarlwydds defense, both fera wings showing good pace and ball control to kick the ball over the line to make the score 12-0 after 20 minutes. Waun answered back with a penalty but were unable to stop fera scoring again who mixed their game up superbly to create openings. After Waun had spread the field to defend the kicks to space, fera broke through the 10 channel passed a ball back inside to the scrum half, who drew the last man and passed for the supporting player to score under the posts to increase their lead. Waun were unlucky not to score in the last play of the half with captain Steffan Jones pick up and go from the scrum 5 metres from the fera line, but fera defence was solid and ball was held up.

Half Time Ystalyfera 22 - 3 Waunarlwydd

Second half saw a big improvement from Waunarlwydd with an increase in possession, intensity and territory. Ystalyferas defence was impressive though causing Waun to suffer with council syndrome where they had difficulty with recycling, causing chances to  go short of the line. The Waun upsurge led to a try for Waunarlwydd centre Adam Mort, who like a dictator was immovable in defence and powerful in attack. Morty's centre partner Scott Davies also played well making clean breaks regularly, this was a good debut from Scott and it was a break by him which led to the try. Waun finally had good ball retention and Morty who has proven impossible to stop from close range all season, powered over after receiving the ball close to the fera line. Fera refused to let Waun back into the game and showed impressive game management to the camp in Wauns 22. Pressure then told with the fera scrum, which was dominant through out providing a penalty try after Waun were guilty of scrummaging offences 5metres from their posts.

Guy Jones and Marcus Besley both played well and were resilient in defeat. Guy has the lung capacity of an Ethiopian distance runner with excellent energy levels, Bez having a contrasting playing style doing the hard graft,  carrying and making a nuisance of himself at the rucks. Ystalyfera were worthy winners and looked a well drilled side, with Waun showing to be a more improved side at home the return game looks to be an exciting prospect. Waun play at home for the next three fixtures and will be looking to pick up point's from these games.
