Waunarlwydd v Tondu | 13th Jan 2018

Waunarlwydd came from behind twice, to win at home against Tondu in poor but typical January weather.

Rain made the conditions wetter than a submarines number plate and colder than a tax collectors heart, which lead to a dismal first half with only a penalty a piece after 25 minutes. Tondu then drew first blood turning the ball over and kicking deep into Waunarlwydds 22, a good chase led to a spillage from Waun which was picked up by Tondu to score untouched from 10yds out.
HT Waunarlwydd 3 - 10 Tondu
Second half was of a much higher quality with both teams making adjustments for the conditions. Waun scored early in the half counter attacking from a stray kick which lead to a series of rucks deep in Tondu's 22, good patience led to Rhys Cherry bowling over from close range. Steff Jones was next to go over the line for Waun after a Sam Pridgeon break deep into Tondu's half gave Waun a chance to use the unguarded blind side to score again to make it 15 - 10. Undeterred Tondu then went for an old fashioned catch and drive from a line out 20 metres from Wauns try line, showing good power and control to score from that distance. Tondu's backs were next with a well worked midfield move seeing their centre break free, the subsequent draw and give in front of the full back lead to a bad pass, but the ball was controlled using the boot by his centre partner to touchdown and make the score 15 - 24. Waunarlwydd were down but not out with 10 minutes to go, responding with a catch and drive from a line out which turned to a ruck, Waun crashed over from short range. The come back was completed at the death with Steff Jones scoring from the back of a Waun scrum 5yds from the line topping off a gutsy come back in a tough encounter.
FT Waunarlwydd 27 - 24 Tondu
Man of the match was captain Steffan "Turkish" Jones putting in a powerful display on the pitch and proving the only thing higher than his performance levels is his sperm count, welcoming a second child into his family. Big congratulations from all at Waunarlwydd rugby club.
